I was home from school, probably on some excuse or other i had gone to the shops at the end of the road, just as i came out there was a terific roar, i looked up and in those few seconds i saw the plane the swastica and the head of the pilot two bombs released, the plane was very low so everything was very clear i was riveted to the spot there was a great cloud of debris that rose up silently then came the explosion my first thought was that the school at the end of the roadhad been hit i ran back along chester ave to my house diving into the garden ,dont ask me why ,after a few minutes another roar and a spitfire flew over ,hot on the tail of the german .i gotindoors to talk to my mother and some time after we heard another roar, went to look and saw a spitfire doing a victory roll as he flew over, we took it that he had shot the enemy plane down. the bombs had been meant for the gas works, but fell short and hit some houses i cant say how many casualtys, but we heard at least one death.the vivid memory of that german pilot and the bombs soaring ahead of the plane will always be with me i would have been about 11 years old
