During the war I attended Miss Attrill's school in Belmont. When the time came for the evacuations, my uncle took my grandmother (who lived with us), my sister and I to Newton Abbot, Devon on 2nd September 1939. I still remember the soldiers walking up Telegraph Hill. I lived with my Aunties Kit and Cis, who ran the jewellers' shop "Ham and Huddy". I used to help (aged 9) in the shop. My sister went to the local school, but I was delicate and my sister taught me (she was 13) and gave me work to do. We returned home after 3 months because my father could not stick being on his own so we returned to Belmont and stayed there.
During the war my parent's home was bombed - nearly all the ceilings came down.
When Auntie Kit retired, the nephew took over the shop and still runs it! We still call every year on the way to Cornwall for our holiday.
