One of my greatgrandad's friends in the army had his legs blown off one night in a raid and they needed to get to bologne harbour! so my greatgrandad carried this man to Bologne Harbour and when they got to the hospital ship the guards said "You'll have to put him down there and go because we can't let you on." My greatgrandad being the stubborn man that he was said "I can't just leave him there i'm taking him on board!"
"No you're ..."
By this time my greatgrandad had swung his Lee Enfield .303 round and had slotted one into te chamber and was pointing it at the guards. Just then the sergeant of the ship walked over and said "What're you doing? Let the guy take his mate on the ship!". The guards gasped as my greatgrandad carried this guy onto the ship and walked back off to wait for another ship.
Later on my greatgrandad was in the water with fellow soldiers at Dunkirk but my greatgrandad being just short of 5ft6" and he couldn't swim. But being that short and lack of swimmin the guy infront of him let him hold to his backpack and the guy behind him held him up out of the water so that he didn't drown and when he got home every christmas he sent and he got sent a christmas card from the guy that he took to the hospital ship but suddenley the cards stopped and he got a letter from the guys wife saying that he had passed away 3 days before he got the letter which broke my greatgrandads heart! he went to the funeral and gave his best wishes and left feeling happy that he had been tod about it!
