On 8th May 1945 I was a boarder at Notre Dame Convent in Birkdale. My father was working on the railways in the Gold Coast (Ghana) and my mother was employed as a book-keeper at Brookes Bakery in Manchester. Until 1944, my grandmother, with whom we lived, had looked after me but when she died I was sent to boarding school. On the morning of VE day the teacher came into the classroom and wrote PEACE PEACE PEACE on the blackboard and I suppose she told us that the war was at an end. She then left the room, leaving us little girls alone for what seemed like a very long time: presumably she went to talk about the news with other staff. My memory of that time is that we talked about about what would happen after the war with great excitement, focussing on things we'd never had like bananas! Nobody left their seats (I expect we'd been given strict instructions to stay seated) but the occasion was etched on my memory as a moment of great happiness.
