In early 1939, my father got a well-paid job in Luton and so was away from the family for some time. On his return, he announced that with the money he had earned we were all going to Rhyl for a weks' holiday -full board! We all also had new clothes specially bought for the occasion- nice,brightly-coloured sports' shirts, shorts and sandals. We also had a model yacht each for sailing on the paddling pool.
I loved that holiday. As we had never left the city (Birmingham) before, everything was a first ! First time on a Midland Red coach; the great thrill of seeing the sea and its vast sandy beaches;life boats, fishing boats, pleasure steamers, plus the lifeboat being launched down the slipway;being waited on in our rooms by a dark-haired girl complete with black dress, white apron and cap. There are some photos around somewhere of us frozen in time staring out from that pre-war backdrop. That was the first and last time we all spent a holiday together as a family.
On our return, only three weeks remained before war was declared at 11o'clock that Sunday September morning in 1939.
