I was five years old when the war broke out. I went to Holy Trinity School Harpurhey. I have only a vague memory of the day I was evacuated. My sister, aged eleven years, and I went on a bus together with the rest of the class from our school.
We were taken to a place called Turton, a few miles from Bolton. We sat with all the other kids in a school hall, people came in, looked at us, and chose who they wanted to stay with them. At the end of the day there was just my sister and me left, I thought nobody wanted us. Eventually a couple came and took us.
When we got to their house, they already had five evacuees, and I had to sleep on two chairs put together, it was terrible. My mum and dad came to see us the following weekend and couldn't believe what we were going through. My parents immediately took us away. They went back to the people who were organising the placement of the evacuees. They then took us to a lovely family who lived in a country cottage. We were there for two years, I have very happy memories of my stay.
