I was just a young lad. When I was 9 years old on the morning of the 4/5/43. About 2.20am the Germans and the English were fighting overhead. The germans dumped their bombs to make the load lighter - 8 bombs - four large and four small. We were all in the house, one bomb missed the farm buildings by approximately 15-20 yards, another one missed the house by the same distance. Olive, the lady who lived with us woke up shortly beore this happened, she looked out and saw the back yard was lit up and she went through to my parents room and told Mum that the back yard was alight and wondered what was going on. Mum said if we go and look out of the spare room window we could see where the light was coming from. Mum said that we had better get the children up, which they did, alerting Dad, he said he had been in worse conditions. Mum, Olive and us children went down to the kitchen. A few minutes later Mum heard the door open and said " Herbert are you here" he said he was, seconds later, me being the youngest, was not allowed to go outside, because the tiles were sliding off of the house. Luckily nobody was hurt, just some chickens as the shed was hit. A hen came indoors the next day and laid an egg on one of the beds. Olive was lucky to be alive because a piece of ceiling fell on her bed and it took two men to lift it off.
