From the Twenties and the Thiries until World War II began nearly everyone went window shopping. The shops stayed open on Fridays and Saturdays until 9 o'clock. Through the week they closed at five or six. All the shop windows were lit up. We would start at Gresham Road and keep to the left side of Linthorpe Road wandering down to the Railway Station then back up on the other side of the road. If the dress shops were having a sale on the Saturday the clothes were shown in the shop window on Friday nights. I remember buying a lovely blue dress from Jane Kay's for 7/6d, or nowadays 38p. It was smashing. Bit of course men's wages were 拢2 10 shillings to 拢3.
