This story was submitted to the People's War site by Martin Evans, on behalf of Alice Birkenheadand has been added to the site with her kind permission. Alice fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was evacuated in April 1942 at the age of six from my home in Manchester to Blackpool.

I remember having a label tied to me and my sister with a piece of string at the Railway Station. I had no idea where I was going.

We got of the train at the end of the line and found out that we were in Clevelleys. We were taken from the station to the Town Hall to await collection.

People chose who they wanted to have, and we were left right to the end because nobody wanted two girls.
