This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer (Rachel Irven) from Three Counties Action, on behalf of Mary Dell, and has been added to the site with her permission. Mary Dell fully understands the site's terms and condition.
Norman lived with his widowed father on the London Road, and he was our Methodist Sunday School Teacher before the War (there is no longer a Methodist Church in Wycombe Marsh). When the war started he was about 18, and he was called up and went into the RAF.
When he came home on leave he taught us at Sunday School again, he used to come to Church in his uniform and we all idolised him. He wrote special words to a hymn tune for us to sing, words I still remember.
God bless the Boys in Navy
And the Boys in Blue
In the air
And on the water
Underwater too.
Norman didn鈥檛 come back from the war, he must have been about 20 when he died and his father seemed to age 30 years overnight.
I will never forget Norman, he was such a good teacher.
