My husband (Alexander Gow McNab) was in the merchant navy during the war. He was a petty officer (Boson) for the most part. At 17 he was on British Tankers.
Throughout the whole war he was torpedoed three times. Once he had to spend 13 days in a life boat waiting to be rescued after his boat was sunk.
We married after the war in 1950. Being torpedoed three times didn't put him off going to sea, he still went for eight years after we were married.
