I was stationed in a place called Venray where I was a Medical Sergeant responsible for the troops of the East Yorkshire Regiment also the Green Howards Regiment also. One Day a young Man came to me and spoke to me all about his Family and he showed me his pictures of his family and he also had a pretty wife, but heartbreak came later as we were talking to each other a mortar shell came towards us I jumped out of the way but the shell hit my friend first I could not see anything but on inspection of his trousers I saw a small incision a small burn mark appeared on the stitch of his trousers this was to be the entry mark of the wound. My medical personnel came to take my friend to the Medical place where the wounded were treated and there was to be bad news the young Soldier had died from the wound he sustained, we later found out that a piece of shrapnel had entered his Femural bone (thigh bone)and ricocheted up past his stomach severing all his major organs this was one of the many I had come to briefly know during my time as the Medical Sergeant.
