I was born in 1942 and we had an air raid 'shelter' under the dining room table. I do not really remember the raids, but just the excitement of being woken and taken downstairs to cuddle into the eiderdowns in the shelter. My grandmother (Ethel) used to bring tea ad thin slices of bread and butter, which made these nights special for me (she was quite unpopular with her daughters for using up the precious butter ration). Luckily we were not bombed - I just remember the fun!
