This story was added to the website on behalf of Gladys by Joanne with Gladys’ permission.

I was in the land army during the war and remember some things. I enjoyed it but it was hard work. One time the Queen Mum came to see us and I remember seeing her amongst the crowds, that was a good day.

The training was hard and I remember marching a lot, we had no guns. We marched along the edge of the sea and in the sea, that’s what I remember most, marching.

One time I worked in the army barracks and washed the soldier’s clothes. I remember the soldiers looked after me.
