(This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Three Counties Action on behalf of Mrs Putnam and has been added to the site with her permission. Mr Putnam fully understands the sites terms and conditions).
I was at school in Hackney London aged from eight to fourteen. Because of lack of teaching and adult help during the war years I was given the duty of giving the younger children their daily dose of malt which was given in a classroom that all the windows were bricked up.
During the afternoon younger children had a daily nap which was on camp beds blue blanket for boys and pink for girls.
My fathers Home Guard duties were with the Home Gueard in Victoria Park we learnt morse code together.
My school hours were one week mornings and one week afternoons. The school was destroyed one Sunday afternoon by a direct hit Rocket. Fortunately the school was empty of persons.
