In 1945, my wife Mabel and I had the run of 4 Sandy Lane because Mabel's mother had been evacuated.

We heard a doodlebug coming and dashed into the cupboard under the stairs and closed the door. After the bomb cut out and landed somewhere, we were suddenly confronted with a problem; we were locked in! Not wishing to spend the rest of the war under the stairs, there was only one thing to do; break the door down. Fortunately, when I hurled myself at it, the latch gave way! I found myself sprawling in the hall but we were free.

We were relieved...out of prison almost! We didn't relise we were in prison until we wanted to get out!
