During the war years on transfer to the secondary school, I had a 15 mins brisk walk up a hill, to cross over a main arterial road, then onwards to the school location. After a bomb had razed two houses to the ground on that main rd, I was able to cut through what had been the owners gardens into their back 10ft alleyway, to get to the school. cut my walking time down by 5 mins!.
Many houses had to have wooden props on their outside walls to support bomb damage blast. I used to play 'Bally' on our back wall between the two wood posts
When the war finished, the Morrison shelter was put out in our front garden as a stage for the celebrations. As children we were treated to a Puppet show, with sugar almonds in an eathernware beaker given by the Government of Australia. I still have that beaker, In the evening there was a talent show, dancing, and lighting the bonfire underneath 3 effigies of Hitler, Goering, and Mussolini. We also had a street party on another day. Every table and chair was taken outside , tablecloths came out of drawers, and all us children from babies to teenagers sat down to eat sandwiches, cakes and jelly.
