I cannot complain, as a child my war was not really very bad, I lived away from the city and we never had any frights or bombs. Only when I visited my Grandparents in Manchester, I well remember the 1940 bombing and seeing Piccadilly burn in the distance, that Christmas. My Aunt had to walk to work, as the buses could not run.
My Father had friends in the farming world and he was able to obtain many items through the Black Market, I did not know at ten, that this was wrong. I used to spend lots of my Saturday mornings riding my bicycle to deliver, eggs , butter, cheese, meat and tea and sugar to all the customers, and there were plenty.
I was very happy to do this, as I always received a very good tip at each delivery. It was not until I was older that I realised I was almost a criminal!.So my war was not so bad really. I often read of others and the problems they had and think how lucky my sister and I were.
