HMS Ceylon was being used as an ack-ack cruiser to escort other ships in convoy. On her return voyage, not having fired the guns in anger, the gunnery officer asked the captain if they could test the guns on soome abondoned looking shacks on the shoreline of a nearby island. On getting the go-ahead, every gun on the ship opened up, and completely flattened every trace of the shacks.
On return to harbour, they were cheered into port. Mystified, they asked why. "Well, of course, it was your action against Jap HQ in the area." Yes - that's what the shacks had been. My dad says he thinks everybody kept quiet about that one!!!
