Myrtle my Grandma was at home in north London during the early years of WW2 when a shell from a battery protecting the nearby railway line came through the roof and embedded itself in the sofa. An Air Raid Warden was on the scene quickly and to her amazement started poking the shell with a broom handle. It all seemed very amateur. Grandma was still in shock and found herself sitting on the pavement outside the house. Suddenly a hand appeared in front of her face and a voice said here is a cup of tea, it will make you feel better. Grandma never knew who thrust the tea into her hand. A very British solution!
