My father had been away from his family for over four years. We knew he was due home but did not know when. My mother, brother and myself had spent the duration of the war in Chester, my father serving with the Cheshire Regiment. In July of 1945 my mother took us on a trip to New Brighton. We spent the day on the beach and watched a troop ship make it's way up the River Mersey. It had already docked when we crossed the river by ferry. What a wonderful sight greeted us. The whole of the ship was a mass of khaki. Men were shouting and waving to all on the ferry. My mum said " wouldn't it be lovely if dad was on that ship" it is a sight that has stayed with me for almost 60 years.
Well he was on that ship. He wasn't allowed to disembark for three days. He always said that they were the three longest days of his life knowing that his family were so close in Chester. We were all eventually reunited on my 10th birthday.
