In May 1941, I was 6 years old. My father would not agree to an Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden, so Mother, Father, Aunt and myself all took refuge under the stairs, with a little bed made up for me. When the bomb fell it was between Frank Street and Fitton Street in Nuneaton, just where our shelter would have been. Our house was very badly damaged, later to be demolished, but we were safe. The only casualty was my Aunt who had a cut hand, caused by the blast from the bombs as it blew off the door. When morning came, my father said he would go along to the nearby Co-op shop in Henry Street where he was the manager, as we could have a wash there. Imagine his feelings when arriving in the vacinity all was devastation, the shop was totally destroyed as well. What a night. It will remain in my memory forever.
