Gas Mask

I started school in 1944. We were all given a gas mask which we kept in a special box. We used to have drills to practise how to put them on in case there was bombing. A particular thing that I remember about the mask was that the children’s ones had a little orange flap which we called ‘Donald Duck’ because it always went up and down during breathing. My mum always said that the Hitler started the war because I was on the way into the world.
