I was 11 when it started. We used to go walking every sunday morning. I can remember going in a country pub and they told us there was a war on. My cousin's husband was killed on D-Day. She found out after that he was killed by Canadians in Friendly Fire. My brother was in Italy for 4 years. He left a baby girl who was only a few months old so he didn't see her for 4 years. When we went to school, we had to take our gas mask. The air rade shelter was at the other end of the field, so if there was a bomb you wouldn't make it. At home we didn't have an air rade shelter. We used the pantry. Then we got fed up of sitting in it so we stayed in bed. My brother wouldn't be annoculated so he had to sign a form to say that if he got a disease it was his own fault. The only time Hyde was bombed was the night of the Manchester blitz. My mother's friends house was destroyed. It was awful. When I was 16 I wanted to join the land army and then the Wrens. My idea of the Wrens was walking around in the uniform getting the men. My mum wouldn't sign the form. We never went hungry. I never remember being scared. We used to collect newspapers. We never wasted anything.
