I have recently moved to an area near Dungonnel Dam and while researching stories for this website came a cross a local one.
The vast boggy expanse of Dungonnel Dam (now a protected area of natural beauty) was used for manouvers during the war.
A young Belgian solider met his death there by stepping on an explosive device as a result of these practice sessions.
The local priest at the time,Father Fallon, drummed up the funds to place a memorial for this young man. A Silver Cross was erected to pay tribute to him.
In more recent years, the current priest, Father O'Hanlon paid a visit there with a local parishioner and found the cross to be damaged. They set about restoring it.
I like to think that those close to this young man would know how his memory has been kept alive by those who never even knew him.
