The War Begins and my experience with machinery was in demand.
I rented 38 acres in Carleton Rode and farmed it before the war. I drove a steam engine for the threshing machine and looked after all the farm machinery. Because of my mechanical experience I was sent to Setchey, near King鈥檚 Lynn, to the army depot there. I was Company Armourer for the 14th Norfolk Regiment and the Home Guard. I maintained all the guns including rifles and machine guns. This was a protected job so I wasn鈥檛 sent abroad.
Weekends
During the war I visited my wife, Kathryn Randall, who remained in Carleton Rode. The farm work was continued with the help of contractors. However, I often went to a camp at Hapton Hall with two officers, Captain Balta and Captain Gilbersleeves. We instructed men in the use of Mills bombs. My job at the end of the session was to locate the unexploded bombs and destroy them. I enjoyed this work helping and instructing others!
