I was an altar boy of 12 years old at St Albans church, at the top of Penny Street, during the blackout days of the war.
One of our duties was to assist at the 7am Mass each day, and because the blackout was so important, all the leaded glass windows were covered with plywood boards stopping the light coming out of the church. It was very dark, and this made it difficult for us to see or even move about at all; they even went to the trouble of covering the two solitary candles on the altar with steel covers!
THe darkness was such that you felt it nearly impossible to do your duties.
