Laburnum Cottage, Bolnhust (1973)
I remember well the day I was ecacuated from Walthamstow in East London to Keysoe, it was all a BIG adventure.
A friend and myself were billeted at St. Mary's Vicarage in Keysoe and really enjoyed our time there.
We attended Keysoe School (where I eventually earned a 11+ Scholarship).
Playing with the unexploded Incendiary Bombs deposited on the Football Field was very exciting for us kids.
Watching the Bren Gun Carriers going up and down the roads was exciting, as were visits to the Air Force Base at Thurleigh where the Americans used to give us sweets and look after the Girls of the area.
Remember the Mobile Fish and Chip Van that used to ply the area on Friday Nights?
I remember that very well.
We were eventually re-billeted with Mrs. Horsford who taught us Courtesy and Etiquette which is unfortunately defunct these days and then to the 'Warners' at Laburnum Cottage in Kimbolton Road, Bolnhurst (Pic Attached).
My Father came to visit us in 1940 and stayed at the White Horse Inn in Keysoe.
Such happy carefree days for us Kids, but our general education stood us in good stead for the rest of our days.
Catching 'Newts' in the streams was good fun and I have not seen one since.
Ah! memories.. They are still with me and I would like to go back for a visit one day.
We did go back for a holiday in 1973..
We Family to climb the Belfry in St. Mary's Church (as we did as Kids) but the stairs were much too narrow.
Sigh!
