Mary was living in London at the time when the blitz was happening in London. She describes how she felt and what she heard as bombs were dropped on London.
Mary describes how she would hear the noise of a lane coming over and then all of a sudden the noise would stop and it would go completely silent. She says that she would stop and wait for the crash of the plane, but instead you would hear a terrific explosion and you knew that it would have caused terrible damage.
Mary knew of two girls who were killed in a church who had gone to a service. When asking Mary how she felt about the bombing which occurred she said that it was awful to say but she was thankful that she was still in one piece, but at the same time felt sorry for the people who had lost their lives.
On asking Mary about the atmosphere in London at this time, she said the atmosphere was very positive and upbeat despite the circumstances. Everyone helped each other and this made you feel safe in some respect. Every night there were dances, as picture houses became dance halls and this brought everyone together. This created a trust between people as you all knew that you were in the same situation together. Even though bombing was occuring, Mary had no fear of walking alone in the dark alone, as everyone was there to help each other.
