I had been working in an aircraft factory for three years when suddenly the War began to make me realise that now was the time to do something about it.The defeat of the airbourne forces in Holland in 1944 made up my mind for me. I took a day off work and went in to the city center, found its recruiting office and walked in. The sergant wished me good morning and told me to sit - for an hour. He asked me dozens of questions the last one being my D.O.B. I had come this far and I had no intention of backing down now so I lied about my age and it worked. I asked when I would be called up and he said within two weeks. He wished me good luck and as I reached the door he said take care lad, I was seventeen and four months it was 1944. I told my mother the next day she was upset but proud my Dad was full of praise and gave me one piece of advise. Keep your head down.
Two weeks later I was on a train heading for Scotland I had to report to the Scotish barracks in Berwich on Tweed. There were twenty four of us, we were all joining different regiments Royal Scots. Royal Scots Fuliliers, and my regiment K.O.S.B.
The first six weeks of training was hard but then you realise that everything you have been taught is for a reason. After a spot of leave we were told to report to the barracks at Fort William for Battolion training. It was now April 1945 the war was gowing very well and I was looking forward to joining one of the battalions in Germany, but it never happened.
We were told that our posting was now to the Far East to join the 2nd Batt who were fighting in Burma. It was now the July "45" when we reached India we were sent to a jungle training school but halfway through Japan surrendered. August "45".
