When I was only 3or 4years old I went to school.
The School years were 4 to 14 in those days, but children were taken early as so many mothers were doing war work.
My special memory is of all the children being in the air raid shelter when a bomb hit one end.
The school air raid shelter was underground, a large brick arch covered with about 10 feet of earth.
It was very dark, bricks and rubble were falling around us and teachers were trying to get the children to the safe end of the shelter.
Adults were shouting, children were screaming, I had been struck on the head and was bleeding quite a bit, (I still have the scar) I was terrified and hanging on to Miss Kirkup鈥檚 long old fashioned black skirt.
Luckily for all the children from Windy Nook and Heworth Colliery, the bomb did not explode, and as far as I am aware, there were no serious injuries though the crater was a great place to play in till long after the end of the war.
