I think it was 1942. I was about 8 years old. I can remember the night Portsmouth Guildhall was on fire. We lived near and we were running with coats over our heads because of all the sparks. We were going to Victoria Barrucks to get the army lorry that used to take people over Portsdown Hill to sleep the night, we used to sleep in the tunnells in the hill side. The children used to sit on the slopes and watch Portsmouth on fire.
