This contribution to People鈥檚 War was received by the Action Desk at 大象传媒 Radio Norfolk and submitted to the website with the permission and on behalf of Mr. Frederick Barnes
I was a Royal Signal Corps dispatch rider based on the seafront at The Imperial Hotel, Great Yarmouth. My patch covered Hemsby, Hopton and Blakeney with 202 Brigade. I was on leave after Christmas and went to the pub at the end of the road, Regent Road, where all the holiday makers go these days. It was called the Diver鈥檚 Pub and it was there I met my future Wife, Molly. She was on fire watch duty and offered to buy me a drink and we went onto the Liberal Club to go dancing. At the end of the evening I walked Molly back to her digs and then she insisted in her capacity as a firewatcher in walking me back to The Imperial Hotel!
We had a very long and happy married life together, sadly Molly passed away a couple of years ago, I now live in Hertfordshire, but try to return at least once or twice year to the holiday resort of Yarmouth to recall those happy days even in wartime when Molly and I walked out together.
