My family and I lived in the Co-Operative buildings at the top of Calder Street. I was the proud owner of a bicycle which my father used for his Home Guard duties, rallying others of the Home Guard as and when required. If my memory serves me right I was paid 1s6d for the use of that bike.
On one famous occasion my father , in full uniform, rifle etc. Set off down the hill at Calder Street, he was so weighed down with his equipment that he couldn't stop the bike at the cross..... he went sailing across the road and ended in John Black the grocers window.
