In 1944 I was serving in the ATS on Radio Location duties with an anti-aircraft Battery sited at Ravensbourne. One Sunday morning we were holding an on-site Church Parade when the familiar frightening sound of an approaching 'doodlebug' V1 rocket was heard. When the engine stopped we knew it was going to land close to us, probably somewhere near our ATS quarters. Our Captain was really worried about our safety and quickly ordered us to take cover in the shelter. To our amazement the 'doodlebug' turned and disappeared in another direction. We were lucky on that occasion but no doubt someone else 'copped it' but we certainly lived to fight another day.
