My Dad, my oldest sister and myself in 1941
"This story was submitted to the People's War site by Jean Brown and has been added to the website on behalf of Freda Hughes with her permission and she fully understands the site's terms and conditions".
In the old houses, they used to have coal under the stairs; they used to say that's the safest place to be in the war. So me brother who was in the air force cleared it all out and he put railway sleepers up on the ceiling to reinforce it, put a little light in there and chairs. There wasn't much room 'cos there was only me and my mum in there when Dad was at work as my three sisters had been evacuated to Wales. He made it really comfy. When the all clear went my mum had a job to get me out because I was so nervous! When you're six years old you don't know what's going on, bombing and that!
My eldest sister came to visit us with her husband and me mum couldn't get me out. I was a nervous wreck. These doodlebugs used to come over; they used to make these dreadful noises.
