I served an apprenticeship to joinery at F Pulman and Sons, Hopwood Lane Halifax after leaving school at the age of 14. I was generally allocated to a joiner to learn the trade, but in the initial stages I was to run errands, make the tea, keep the wood piles straight and do a general dogsbody work. One of these jobs was to visit the town for suppliers to the joiners.
I remember this day as if it was yesterday as I had to pass on my way through a well know square called Bull Green and there was a ‘Shotdown.’ Me with £109 on show to the public. Collection boxes were there as I think it was the towns ‘Spitfire’ week.
I suddenly thought at the age of 16, what would I do if the German paratroopers came out of the sky, where would I hide and where would I run to.
60 odd years later, I haven’t yet made up my mind and I remain as puzzled today as I did all those years ago.
