During the war, when the blitz was at its height, I lived at home in London with my parents. All was quiet one Sunday afternoon when my Father decided to have a bath. He ran the water and started to get undressed when the siren went. He hurriedly dressed, donned his tin hat and went outside to see what was going on.
On Monday, when my Mother started to do the washing, she could not find my Father鈥檚 dirty underwear anywhere. When he came home from work that night she asked him what he had done with his dirty underwear, which could not be found. To our great amusement, he discovered that he had two sets on. In his haste to get dressed when the siren went he had put the clean clothes on top of the dirty ones which he had not had time to take off. As we often didn鈥檛 undress at night if the raids were bad, all day Monday he had been totally unaware he had been wearing two sets of underwear.
