My father, a member of the Devon Constabulary, was sent to Plymouth after the first major air raid, to assist the local police force.

During one of the subsequent air raids, he took shelter in Smeatons Tower on the Hoe. He was joined by an air raid warden and two sailors.

There was a lull in the bombing and he looked out to find that the Hoe was dotted, along its entire length, with incendiary bombs alight. Some of the buildings overlooking the Hoe had been hit with incendiary bombs and were alight. In the background he could see the City Centre burning.

He would often relate this story as it made a big impression on him.
