As an experienced tractor driver I was called up by the County War Agricultural Committee.

Part of this work was to be contracted out to Market Gardens to help them plough the land and to operate plant setting machines.
During the war the Market Gardens in Nottinghamshire had to grow their own food. This meant that food did not have to be transported from other areas.
I was working around Epperstone. In some ways wartime food in the country was better than in the towns. People could keep their own pig and later slaughter it for food. They could catch their own rabbits. I know how to catch rabbits by hand. The secret is to know where they are. They won't run far when they are frightened. Then you just put your foot on them and pick them up.
