My brother (two years my junior) joined the Sea Cadets. They learned to row on the pleasure skiffs hired out by Billy Moore — an old sailor with a wooden leg. Later his war effort was to help a local farmer. Eventually he married a farmer’s daughter and raised a prize herd of Guernsey’s (and three jolly children!)
