This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from Stoke Action Desk on behalf of Marjorie Joan McDonald and has been added to the site with their permission. Marjorie fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

I met a very good friend, through the work I was doing who was French. She was called Yonlandy. We made a very big effort to see each other after the war, so me and my husband went over to see her and her husband. We went in the Eiffel Tower. On the first floor they鈥檇 got an animal shelter. On the next floor there was a restaurant. You could sit down and have a meal and it would travel round very slowly so you could view all the bridge without having to get up of your seat.
My friend said to me, 鈥淚 want you to say hello to my greatest friend鈥. I thought to myself, 鈥渨hat鈥檚 this all about?鈥 We went down to the animals, and she said, 鈥淧ut your hand on the bar there and don鈥檛 move鈥. When I turned round there was a great big orang-utan there 鈥 bigger than me he was 鈥 he must have been 6 feet tall! She said to him 鈥淣ow shake hands George鈥, and he put his hand onto mine and shook it very gently. She鈥檇 taught him how to shake hands. She said to me 鈥淲e will never be parted again.鈥
