At first I was in Hampstead -I was the manager at Hemmings. It was grim: we had a couple of very bad nights. When I got married I went to Enfield - they had it pretty bad there. There were twenty - twentyfive cottages all bombed out - many lives were lost, many dreadful injuries. Once I was walking home, a plane came over, and a piece of hot shrapnel whizzed down right past my face. I went dancing all over the place - clubs and halls. I couldn't sit at home all the time. My husband had falsified his age to get into the forces. He was in the Artillery and was sent abroad. When he came home he never spoke of it - but he had many terrifying nightmares. Was I glad when it was all over? - I'll say!!
