I got married in September 1939 and my husband was called up in 1940. He was stationed abroad, in the Middle East, until 1945 without any leave. My son was born in December 1940 so I had to stay at home. I started working in 1943 in the Co-op grocery until my husband was demobbed in 1946. I was very lucky — my husband came home safe and sound, and my seven brothers were all called up and they all came home again.
