Although he was a baker, Francis Scott was sent to defend a farmhouse with two other men. While they were there, another man ran into the house and said "The Germans are 8 miles away with tanks." They all ran for the beach. One of them got wounded in the leg en route, but I do not know how. That one had to be left behind and was taken prisoner, so survived the war.
When they got to the beach they had to leave their kit. Francis Scott was evacuated by destroyer from "the mole". He witnessed the incident where a British Army captain panicked and was shot dead.
