I was in school when the Empire Kingsley was torpedoed off Botallack Head and I remember that the explosion shook the blackboard. By the time I got out of school she had almost gone down but her stern was still showing out of the water. She drifted on the tide until about seven in the evening when there was a gush of steam before she finally sank. I think it was about 1944 but the exact date is on the lifeboat house at Sennen. Lots of convoys were attacked and we would watch the vapour trails in the sky. Spitfires from Predannick or Portreath, fighting off the Germans, were also a regular occurence.
