On Pearl Harbour Day I turned 11 years old. My dad took my friends and I to the movies for my birthday, it was about 11 o鈥檆lock but in Hawaii it was six hours earlier. We heard a bit about some bombs on the way, but by the time we鈥檇 gotten out of the movies we heard all about it out on the radio. It was very frightening but at the same time it was very exciting. The next day, President Roosevelt made his famous speech 鈥淭his day shall live in infamy鈥.鈥 Suddenly there was a huge rush of patriotism and everyone was doing something for the war effort. My sister Anne grew a victory garden and I worked with my Daddy in the scrap metal business, and we also rendered animals (for nitro glycerine, to make bombs) and repaired army clothes. At school. I remember knitting squares to make quilts for the people in Britain. It made us feel as if we were doing something for the war effort.
