On Monday 11th July 2005 we had a visitor come into school. Her name was Doll Chinery.
Doll was twelve years old when she was evacuated to Norfolk with her sister. When they got to Norfolk they had to sleep on the floor of a village hall. Doris felt sad and lonely to be evacuated away from her parents and home. Whenever a bomb came down Doll and her sister threw themselves over the younger children.
Life was different in the countryside, they would bang a stick against a haystack so that the mice would run out and the dog would kill them. There were no pets as all the animals, especially chickens, kept were used for work or eaten for food.
When Doll was seventeen she worked at a factory but the workers were never told what they were making, after a while Doll found out that they were making Morse code machines to send secret messages.
During the war people used to make mats out of rags. Doll had to make her own clothes, one trick she learned was to wear stockings in her hair to keep it standing up.
During the war she lost her friend but happily, found her years later.
Doris told us that it was 鈥渁 glorious day when the war stopped, a brilliant day.鈥
