Top scoring fighter pilot of the Western Desert
This picture was submitted to the peoples War Site by volunteer John C Haywood 大象传媒 Radio Lincolnshire Action Desk from his own collection. It has been added to the site with his permission, and he fully understands the site terms and conditions.
Squadron Leader Lance Wade D.F.C.and two bars, top scoring fighter pilot of the Western Desert, who recently flew his aircraft safetly back to base with a badly damaged wing. He was flying in a formation of fighters acting as top cover for Kittyhawks attacking shipping in the Gulf of Tunis when enemy fighters attacked. It was a gamble whether he baled out, he said, or try and fly the aircraft back. In the photograph he is examining the damage after his return to his base in Tunisia.
