I’m Nellie Rose Jones, and I’m 83 now.
I was a cook in the WAAF. I was based down in Hendon. I volunteered, right at the beginning of the war.
I remember a lot. We worked hard. I cooked for a lot of men, which was great. We had good food. I had done a lot of cooking before. I used to work in a bakehouse, and I used to cook there, but my main cooking was in the airforce. I didn’t stay there right through the war, but for quite a long time. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Then I met my husband. We had a quick courtship. About a fortnight! And we got married down in Swanage. My husband said ‘It’s now or never’ because he was going abroad. He went to Palastine. He went to quite a lot of places during the war. He was with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was a driver. He used to drive the officers and that, quite a lot.
But there was nothing I can grumble about.
My husband came back, and we had two children. He never talked much about the war, though. He never liked to talk about it.
